TROUBLE MAKERS by Tony Solis

Esta es la primera versión de las fotos que me pìdió VICE USA para el mexican ISSUE publicadas en el 2008. Para ser honestos, me emocioné al recibir la oferta de trabajar con ellos después de tantos e-mails enviados por mi. Vice México aun no existía y casi nadie sabía que se iba a lanzar la edición mexicana. La historia era de tres chicos que a medida que pasaba el tiempo se iban disfrazando de rockstars buscapleitos. Lo de buscapleitos la mera verdad no nos salió muy bien dada la delicadeza de los modelos. Roberto de TEAMO fue el encargado de vestir a los chicos. El resultado nos encantó a los dos y rápidamente envié las fotos a la entonces editora de moda de VICE USA. Su respuesta me confundió un poco pues me pidió más interacción entre los chicos, un poco mas gay (pensé que ya era muy gay) y que añadiera cambios más urbanos en la ropa. Añadirle cambios me pareció muy forzado y opté por crear una nueva historia con los mismos modelos. En cuanto tuve la segunda versión la envié y quedaron encantados. A mi me parece mejor la primera.

Muchos meses después me llegó mi cheque por 100 dólares a nombre de Tony Solis imposible de cobrar en ningún banco mexicano o del mundo porque estaba rayado y mi nombre de pila no es Tony Solis (tengo dos nombres y dos apellidos). Me pareció mejor idea enmarcar el cheque que intentar cobrarlo.

This is the first published mexican ISSUE version shooting required by VICE USA I made on 2008. Honestly, I got excited about receiving a job offer after I sent them so many e-mails. Vice Mexico didn't exist yet, and almost nobody knew that the mexican version was to be shipped. The story was about 3 kids, during the shooting they dressed themselves with bully rocker costumes. They weren't as tough as it was supposed to be since were not really boyish. Roberto from TEAMO was the stylist. We loved the result and I sent the photos to the VICE USA fashion editor. Their response confused me a little since they asked me to make the boys interact more, a little more gay (though I tought they were enough gay) and add more urban clothing changes. I tought adding more changes was false and I decided to create a new story with the same models. I sent the new version as soon I got it and they loved it. I prefered the first.

Many months later I received my check for 100 usd at Tony Solis name, impossible to exchange at any mexican or international bank, because it was damaged, and my real name is not Tony Solis, ( I have 2 names and 2 last names).

Luego de unos meses de publicar mi trabajo con NYLON MEXICO y la revista 192, decidí que era tiempo de bsucar suerte en otras publicaciones. Había estado haciendo ya trabajo comercial para algunas empresas, pero tenía ganas de publicar una editorial de moda en alguna revista nueva. Contacté a Marbrisa, una gran amiga y la modelo a quien más me gusta retratar y le propuse la idea de unas fotos en su apartamento del Centro de Ciudad de México. No había gran historia, lo que sí tenía en mente era que quería proyectar una mezcla de tristeza, soledad y sexualidad como no lo habia hecho antes. También contacté a Carlos Ruiz, a quien conocí haciendo la Portada del suplemento NYLON GUYS MEXICO, cuyo trabajo respeto mucho. Le pedí una coordinación "con marcas", de grandes diseñadores mezclados con talento local para asi poder entrar a publicaciones internacionales en el mejor de los casos.

Llegó el día y tanto Marbrisa como yo nos sorprendimos al ver que Carlos había llegado con varias piezas de la nueva colección de Gucci para Primavera/Verano, que justo un día antes había llegado a México. La ropa era espectacular: sexy, oscura, metálica, se adecuaba perfecto a lo que teniamos en mente... Hicimos las fotos y no fue dificil manejarla, ya que tanto la modelo como yo estábamos en etapas difíciles de nuestras vidas y creo que eso nos ayudó bastante para encontrar expresiones, situaciones...

La primera revista a la que la envie fue Código 06140. Anteriormente habia hablado con ellos en muy buenos términos y habia quedado de mandar material, pero luego de un par de semanas de preguntar qué les habia parecido la sesión y no recibir respuesta me di por vencido. Luego las mande a ILOVEFAKE magazine, donde tambien contestaron pero luego volvi a quedarme en una especie de limbo, luego Celeste y luego otras más... La moda caduca muy rápido, asi que se quedaron enterradas en mis archivos.

Me dio risa cuando vi unas fotos en la revista Gatopardo donde Alejandra Guzman utilizaba el mismo vestido Gucci en una pose muy similar a la de Marbrisa un par de meses después, y luego más cuando vi a Belinda, la estrella pop, usar el vestido, los zapatos y practicamente todo en su video "Egoista". Ahi me di cuenta que ya poco podia hacer por aquella sesión tan agradable y tan especial para todos los que trabajamos en ella. Stupidmags...

After some months of contributing with NYLON MEXICO and 192 magazine, I decided that I should try sending my work to different magazines. I was doing commercial work for some companies, but I wanted to publish fashion photos in a new magazine where I had never published my work. I called Marbrisa, a very good friend of mine and the model I like to photograph the most, and I proposed her to do some photos in her Centro Historico's apartment. There was no big story behind them, just a mix of deep loneliness, sadness and sexuality like I had never tried before. I contacted Carlos Ruiz-Manjarrez too, who I 've met when we worked together doing the NYLON GUYS MEXICO cover. I really appreciate and respect his work. I asked him for a "label full" styling, mixing big designers with local talent, so we could sell it to international magazines in the best scenario. The day of the shooting Marbrisa and I were surprised when we saw that Carlos arrived with the brand new Gucci collection (Spring/Summer) that the day before arrived to Mexico. Those were amazing, sexy, spectacular clothes full of metal, just the way we wanted to look in the story. We did the photos and it was very easy for us to find the mood because the model and I were in difficult stages of our lives, so we used it on our benefit...

The first magazine were I send them was Codigo 06140. I talked to them before and they told me they liked a lot my work, so I told them I was going to send them a brand new story. A couple of weeks later, without any answer from them, I gave up. The I send them to ILOVEFAKE magazine were first they told me they liked my work but the I never received news about them. The Cleste magazine and then some more... Fashion expires fastly, so the pics were buried on my personal files.

It was really funny when I saw some photos in Gatopardo magazine where Alejandra Guzman (a local pop star) was wearing the same Gucci dress in a very similar pose of the Marbrisa's a couple of months after we did that shooting, and it was moooore funny when I saw Belinda (another local pop star) using the dress, the shoes, almost everything from that Gucci collection in her video for "Egoista" song. That was when I realized that I couldn't do much more for that story, so special for everyone who worked on it. STUPIDMAGS!!!

FIONA PITT by Bryant Eslava

Bueno, esta sesión fué para Fiona Pitt y un impresionante equipo en Los Angeles, con un grupo de 3 coordinadores de moda y una maquillista: Jessica Chewning , también una estilista de cabello Cici Anderson. La sesión fué en Studio City en Los Angeles , en una casa en las colinas. La casa pertenecía a una anciana que era estilista, es de los lugares más bonitos que he visto, era como estar en una película de los 60's. Muchísima joyeria vintage y cambios de ropa. La idea era usar esto para el book de Fiona, y luego una de las estilistas tuvo la idea de contactar a Vampd Magazine, me pidieron unas fotos y se las envié. Estuve muy ocupado haciendo varios shootings, para ese entonces la revista me pidió los creditos de las cosas que utilicé, contesté 2 días después que me pidieron los creditos y ellos respondieron: Demasiado tarde. Entonces les pregunté si podía públicar mis fotos en el siguiente número y núnca contestaron. STUPIDMAGS!!!

Well this shoot was of Fiona Pitt and an amazing team up in Los Angeles, It was a group of 3 wardrobe stylist and a makeup artist: Jessica Chewning and hair: Cici Anderson.
The shoot was in Studio City, Los Angeles in an amazing house up in the hills. The house belonged to an older women who is a wardrobe stylist/designer , her house was the most amazing place I ever saw. It was like being in a movie from the 60's. A lot of vintage Jewelry and furniture. The shoot lasted up to 6 hours, the idea was to get this to Fiona's portafolio and then one of the stylist had the idea to send this photos to Vampd Magazine, so I did it , then they replied and requested some of the photos. On the meantime I was really busy with a lot of some other shootings, and the magazine asked for the jewelry and clothes credits, I send it 2 days after... and they just answered: Too late. I told them If I could publish my photos on the next Issue and they never replied. STUPIDMAGS!!!

NO PORTADA / Natalia Lafourcade NYLON mex por Tony Solis

Para nuestra edición especial de música de julio, Natalia resultó ser la indicada para ser la chica de portada. Tuvimos algunos problemas con la habitación del hotel que nos prestaron para la sesión (eramos como 10 personas o mas, y la habitación era muy chica), pero al final pese a lo incomodo de trabajar en un espacio tan reducido, fue una sesión divertida y sin mayores problemas.

En lo particular, Natalia a quien no conocía personalmente me pareció una chica muy segura de lo que dice, sencilla, bonita, pequeña, inteligente y carismática. Hicimos nuestras opciones de portada (la segunda de arriba para abajo, mi favorita) y casi a punto de irse a imprenta, decidieron cambiar la opción para meter otra que en lo personal no me gustaba mucho. En fin, provecho.

Natalia was the indicated person to be on the music edition cover . We had a few problems with the hotel room designated for the shooting ( we were about 10 people or more, and the room was very small), but at the end it was a really funny shooting and without any other problems.

In particular, Natalia who I did not know personally, was a really confident girl on what she says, simple, pretty, little and smart. We had the magazine cover options ( The second one from the top to the bottom is my favorite) and almost it was gonna be the one to be printed, however the team decided to change it and they choose another one that I did not like so much.
